In 1941 Reg and Ethel Christie move into a dilapidated house in Notting Hill, 10, Rillington Place. Ethel is puzzled that Christie, a special constable, spends so many nights away from home but believes he is above being bribed for special perks. However she is irate to find him in pubs with other women but forgives him and refuses to leave him despite his domestic violence towards her. She still has her suspicions about his nocturnal activities, particularly when a female acquaintance goes missing. Seven years later the Christies welcome a young couple, Beryl and Timothy Evans as their lodgers at Rillington Place.

Loved-up newly-weds Beryl and Tim Evans move into 10, Rillington Place and are given house rules, including to keep out of the back yard. They have a baby, Geraldine, but Christie plays on their financial woes and plants suspicion of his wife's infidelity in Evans' mind. So, when Beryl falls pregnant again Christie, claiming medical experience, offers to perform a termination - with fatal results. Afterwards he persuades the simple young widower that they should dispose of her body, lying about her whereabouts. Too naïve and trusting to appreciate that he has been led into a trap by Christie Evans finds himself being arrested for killing his wife and child.

Christie is a key prosecution witness at Evans' trial, where he gets Beryl on side and, despite sharp cross examination by Evans' barrister Malcolm Norris, the hapless youngster is found guilty and executed. For all the promise of a new house Christie returns to Rillington Place with Beryl, taking a new tenant in Beresford Brown. However Ethel's realization of the truth does her no good, requiring more lies from Christie. More murders follow before a suspicious Beresford makes a disturbing discovery, leading to police intervention and, despite his pleas of insanity, the justice which Christie had escaped for almost two decades.
